Global Environment Facility [GEF]

The Global Environment Facility was established to forge international cooperation and finance actions to address four critical threats to the global environment: biodiversity loss, climate change, degradation of international waters, and ozone depletion. Related work to stem the pervasive problem of land degradation is also eligible for GEF funding. Launched in 1991 as an experimental facility, GEF was restructured after the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro to serve the environmental interests of people in all parts of the world. The facility that emerged after restructuring was more strategic, effective, transparent, and participatory. In 1994, 34 nations pledged $2 billion in support of GEF’s mission; in 1998, 36 nations pledged $2.75 billion to protect the global environment and promote sustainable development. The GEF can succeed in its global environmental mission only as part of a worldwide movement toward sustainable development. GEF brings together 166 member governments, leading development institutions, the scientific community, and a wide spectrum of private sector and non-governmental organizations on behalf of a common global environmental agenda.

United Nations Development Programme [UNDP]

Working at the country, regional and global levels UNDP delivers most of its services through its 132 country offices but it also engages in global and regional advocacy and analysis to increase knowledge, share best practices, build partnerships, mobilize resources, and promote enabling frameworks including international targets for reducing poverty. In addition, UNDP supports Technical Cooperation Among Developing Countries.

Fonds Français Pour l’Environnement Mondial [FFEM]

United Nations Office for Project Services [UNOPS]

What is UNOPS? UNOPS is an arm of the United Nations that provides project-management services in every field where the UN has a mandate - from landmine awareness to public sector reform, from informatics solutions to eradicating poverty. Upon request, UNOPS manages development projects or provides specialized services, as needed. These services include selecting and hiring project personnel, procuring goods, organizing training, managing financial resources and administering loans. In the field of development, UNOPS is the largest service provider in the United Nations system, working on behalf on more than 30 UN departments and organizations. But UNOPS also offers services to bilateral donors, international financial institutions, developing country governments and others, at their request. In 2000, UNOPS delivered services valued at $US471 million for more than 2,600 projects around the world.

Under the aegis of the Ramsar Convention On Wetlands and with the support of the European Commission, the MedWet Initiative was conceived in the beginning of the ’90s as an experiment in long-term collaboration, on many levels, among governmental and non-governmental organisations and individuals; a joint venture, as an integral part of the efforts for the conservation and wise use of the Mediterranean Basin.

UNDP Albania

In 1991 Albania emerged from close to 50 years of communist rule and isolation when the first multi-party democratic elections were held. Albania’s rapid transition to democracy and a market economy, and the acute political, social and economic challenges it continues to encounter determine UNDP’s development assistance in the country. UNDP has worked in the country since 1981 and has been present with an office in the capital, Tirana, since August 1991.

UNDP draws on its experience in over 170 countries and territories worldwide, and on the expertise of UN specialized agencies, to design innovative and effective development initiatives. In Albania it has become an increasingly attractive partner for bilateral donors in tackling some of the most complex and delicate development issues facing the country. The projects of UNDP in Albania are designed and funded within the parameters of the Country Cooperation Framework (CCF), which covers the years 2001-2005. The two current thematic areas, outlined in the links below, are Democratic Governance and Human Security, and the cross-cutting issues of Gender, Information and Communication Technology for Development (ICTD), and Environment. UNDP projects strive to build the capacity of the Government and its institutions while stimulating complementary activities in civic society to ensure sustainable human development.
