North African Governments commit to new taxonomic capacity building network
Thursday 6 March 2003

The Government of Algeria joined Egypt and Morocco last week in formally endorsing the establishment of NAFRINET, the North Africa Network for Taxonomic Capacity Building - the ninth regional network of BioNET-INTERNATIONAL, the Global Network for Taxonomy - an IUCN member. The network is now formally operational and will focus on implementing the Global Taxonomy Initiative by building taxonomy to meet priority user-needs in the region. The workplan agreed at a workshop in May 2002 benefited from the inputs of a number of programmes including IUCN-WESCANA amongst others. Further endorsements are anticipated from the Governments of the Libya, Mauritania and Tunisia. All institutions, organizations and individuals interested in demand-driven taxonomic capacity building in the region are encouraged to contact the regional coordinator, Prof Moh Rejdali.
