Omayed Families Receive Olive Seedlings
Friday 5 December 2003, by
In an effort to create alternative livelihoods, MedWetCoast - Egypt supplied Omayed families with olive seedlings at a nominal price, in order to replace overgrazing, hunting and timbering within the protectorate area.
The project handed out around 38, 380 olive seedlings to more than 300 families in Omayed. The success rate in implantation exceeded 95%. Some seedlings are even showing new sprouts.
The provision of the seedlings was preceded by workshops, which the project held to educate the locals on olive implanting and maintenance. The project also contracted an agricultural engineer to supervise the trees’ implantation, irrigation and vaccination against pesticides.
