Management plan progress of the Zaranik protected area

Follow up the last development of the MedWetCoast Project in Egypt. This document presented in tabular form an owerview of expected results, indicators, results achieved on Zaranik protected area and corrective measures must be done in light of problems faced during the developpement process of the Egyptian project. These measures should allow an improvement in the implementation of the management plan.

A workshop for validation of Zaranik Management Plan first draft with stakeholders is scheduled for the second quarter of 2003.

Final habitat map for Zaranik was produced (within the framework of the Portugal protocol), by GIS team.

|- Surveillance activities: water quality, sedimentations & physical properties by the Institute of water analysis, Ministry of Irrigation.
Coordination with different sectors to promote eco-tourism by setting up a "bird land" center on the eastern border of Zaranik, by the project at the site and central level.
Planting of Acacia trees along the sand dunes at the southern border of Zaranik Protectorate, a need expressed by the local communities, for two purposes: fixation of sand dunes, and as an alternative grazing source.
- Motivating local communities to form organizations for the development of local society.
