Management plan progress of the Zaranik protected area

Follow up the last development of the MedWetCoast Project in Egypt. This document presented in tabular form an owerview of expected results, indicators, results achieved on Zaranik protected area and corrective measures must be done in light of problems faced during the developpement process of the Egyptian project. These measures should allow an improvement in the implementation of the management plan.

Setting up the team responsible for the management plan Designation of the local teams, definition of their terms of reference and timetable Zaranik Management Plan Team has completed the first draft for Zaranik Management Plan. (Projects have yet to be developed in details)
Problems faced : Recruitment of a management plan coordinator.
Corrective measures
: Coordinator was recruited in May 2002.
Participative diagnosis with stakeholders and interested parties Local committees, private and public meetings, workshops, participative diagnosis surveys conducted with users, etc. Validation of management plan orientation through local Informal Zaranik communities meetings with site personnel & community advisor.
A workshop for validation of Zaranik Management Plan first draft with stakeholders is scheduled for the second quarter of 2003.
Improvement of the database

- Final habitat map for Zaranik was produced (within the framework of the Portugal protocol), by GIS team.
Field activities, development of management and monitoring actions Actions undertaken in the field, management and monitoring activities, surveys, construction works, infrastructure, etc.
- Surveillance activities: water quality, sedimentations & physical properties by the Institute of water analysis, Ministry of Irrigation.
- Coordination with different sectors to promote eco-tourism by setting up a "bird land" center on the eastern border of Zaranik, by the project at the site and central level.
- Planting of Acacia trees along the sand dunes at the southern border of Zaranik Protectorate, a need expressed by the local communities, for two purposes: fixation of sand dunes, and as an alternative grazing source. - Motivating local communities to form organizations for the development of local society.
Training and network development actions Participation of local people in the project, in training, meetings and missions of national and international experts, etc.
