Management plan progress of the Burullus protected area

Follow up the last development of the MedWetCoast Project in Egypt. This document presented in tabular form an owerview of expected results, indicators, results achieved on Burullus protected area and corrective measures must be done in light of problems faced during the developpement process of the Egyptian project. These measures should allow an improvement in the implementation of the management plan.

||Burullus Management Plan Team has completed the first draft for Burullus Management Plan. (Projects have yet to be developed in details)

||Local committees, private and public meetings, workshops, participative diagnosis surveys conducted with users, etc.
||Workshop for validation of first draft of management plan was scheduled for March 2003, but postponed by Governor of Kafr El Sheikh. Efforts are exerted to set a new date that is suitable for both the Minister of State for Environmental Affairs and the Governor.

|Surveillance activities: water quality, sedimentations & physical properties by the Institute of water analysis, Ministry of Irrigation.
Training program for the Burullus staff on use of MedWet database to enter monitored data, and use as a monitoring tool.
Construction of visitor’s center was completed.
Dredging of Bughaz and canals, recommended by Hydrology expert, undertaken by Local Advisory Committee.
Setting up of weirs on two drains to prevent water hyacinth from entering the lake, and to divert part of the drainage water to be used in newly reclaimed land, recommended by Hydrology expert (Management Plan Team), undertaken by Local Advisory Committee.
|Training and network development actions
||Participation of local people in the project, in training, meetings and missions of national and international experts, etc.
||The national component organized a workshop (8/1/2003 in Qanater, Egypt) for the NGOs within the vicinities of Burullus. With the cooperation of the GEF small grant programme potential conservation efforts that could be done by these NGOs, to be funded by the GEF small grant programme, were presented. Based on these discussions concept papers for four proposed projects were submitted by four NGOs (technical support was provided by National component’s Community Development Experts) to the GEF small grants programme and approved. Project proposals will follow. |
