Activities report
Lebanon project implementation : from site diagnosis to management plan
Period covered : year 2002
Wednesday 23 April 2003, by Web Team

Site Diagnosis activities :

We are in the process of appointing a team for site diagnosis. This team will finalize the SD based on the previous work done by the NCSR. SD will start by the beginning of May, 2003. In the meantime we are also finalizing the selection of the international management plan coordinator. You will be notified of the date of start of the SD and you will start receiving reports accordingly.

Management Plan Process activites :

Although we have not started the SD we have started the process of management planning and drafting the management plan both in Tyre and Aamik. In Aamik we have received a copy of the management plan developed by A Rocha with funding by the Mava foundation. This MP also has been reviewed by Jean Jalbert and we communicated on the phone and he approves the format. This MP however needs to be expanded to the whole estate. At the present it only covers the Skaff part of the lands under conservation. You will receive very soon a copy of the draft management plans for Tyre and Ammik.

On the other hand we have started with the implementation of a few measures that do not need the finalization of the management plan.

- In Tyre:
We are developing signage for the reserve, we are working on turtle conservation in collaboration with MEDASET and on bird conservation with BirdLife International. We are also working on the conservation of water resources through safe use of agro-chemicals and efficient irrigation. A sand dunes zone has been fenced and we are in the process of monitoring the effect of grazing on this area in order to determine its conservation level. An awareness strategy has been developed and is in the process of being implemented.

- In Aamik:
Signage is being prepared and two more guards are going to be deployed. A new guarding scheme has been developed by the site coordinator. In progress also, is a visitor management plan involving income generation for the local community through ecotourism.

Inventory and Cartography activities are in the process, In parallel with the SD.
