MAIN OBJECTIVES AND OUTPUTS OF THE EGYPTIAN PROJECT
1. Development and implementation of policies for the sustainable management of wetlands and coastal areas.
Reinforcing the legal framework required to establish a network of protected areas within Albania.
2. Protection and removal of root causes of the loss of biodiversity of global significance in key demonstration sites.
Instituting and strengthening an integrated approach for the management of selected wetlands and coastal sites in Albania
3. Contributing to "closing the Mediterranean circle" in terms of biodiversity protection and sustainable management of wetlands and coastal zones through networking and training.
Designing and implementing a national training plan.

STATUS AND DESCRIPTION OF THE MEDWETCOAST SITES IN EGYPT
Site is a protected area by law, Ramsar Site, 60000 ha which includes terrestrial and saltmarsh habitat and the eastern tip of lake Bardawil.
Threat: Claims of property rights within the reserve boundaries (Over-grazing and wood extraction) Potential future consequences of Salam Canal (Waste water and agricultural drainage, Rapid urbanisation and development).
Site is a protected area by law, Ramsar Site, 59500 ha which is the lake surface area.
Threat: Extensive pressure on fish resources (Pollution from waste water and agricultural drainage) Disturbances in water inflow and circulation - Erosion of the coastal stretch - Negative impacts of invasive species.
Site is a protected area by law, Biosphere reserve, 150 000 ha which includes mainly sand dunes, inland ridges and plateaux.
Threat: Dense and continuous tourist resorts along the coastline (Quarrying on the ridges) Overgrazing and hunting activities - Agricultural and urban development along the canal - New international highway crossing the reserve.
Status of Llogara mountain, Karaburun peninsula, Sazani island, Orikumi Lagoon
Llogara is a National Park and Important Bird Area
