Green turtle nests to the north of the town of Sour (Tyre)
Tuesday 20 July 2004

Last week, we found some green turtle nests to the north of the town of Sour (Tyre), thus extending our knowledge on the nesting area in that country. Nesting has previously been known only from Al-Mansoori beach close to the border with Israel, and the new records now show that nesting is not confined to that nesting beach.

In 2004, an extensive survey of nesting and potential nesting beaches of marine turtles is carried out along the entire coast of Lebanon: the survey >>>is based on previous work carried out by RAC/SPA and MEDASSET in 2001. Work in 2004 is a joint effort by MSC, an EU-funded project executed by the Lebanese Ministry of Environment, MedWetCoast and MEDASSET. Whereas the country-wide survey has already been successfully completed, work is carried on at the nesting beaches in the south of the country, and thus at those beaches where green turtle nesting has been found. We will thus get a complete and up-dated picture on nesting activities in Lebanon, and thus a basis for further conservation efforts.
