Use of the MedWet Inventory methodologies within the MedWetCoast Project
Final Report of Training seminar, Almada (Portugal), 18-23 February 2002
February 2002, by Web Team

The MedWet tools on wetland inventory are constituted by a set of standard data sheets, an habitat classification system, a database and a mapping procedure. These wetland inventory methods are of great importance for the management planning and for comprehensive programmes of wetland inventories at site, regional or national levels.

The use of the MedWet inventory within the MedWetCoast project intend to respond to national needs of data recording and cartography identified in the project at a first stage. This training was focused on the MedWet inventories methodologies and tools which will allow to save and analyse the information obtained in the site diagnosis studies of the MedWetCoast project in a standardised manner. The audience included the main responsible persons for data processing in order to assist in the management planning, and the future co-ordinators of wetland inventories at national levels, which should be a priority in the wetland strategies to be developed.

This seminar took place in Almada from the 18th to the 23rd February 2002. The sessions with theoretical modules and working groups were held at Casa da Cerca, a small palace made available by the municipality of Almada, and the modules involving computer work took place in the new facilities of the Centro de Zonas Húmidas at Olho de Boi, Almada.

The main objective of the training was to enable the participants to develop standard collection of data and habitat maps in order to assist the management planning and to develop future national wetland inventories under the MedWetCoast project. For this the following specific objectives were determined:

  1. To familiar the project actors with the MedWet inventory methodology: specifically its protocols for data collection, the principles for data standardisation and the mapping of wetland habitats following a specific classification system.
  2. To familiar the participants with the use of the MedWet database and to define the necessary future improvements of the MedWet Database to be used in their countries.
  3. To define the needs of database adaptation for the countries of the MedWetCoast project
  4. To identify the necessary infrastructure to develop a GIS for the data analysis
