Life third country project : Region of Vlora - Albania
Capacity building on conservation of albanian wetlands ecosystems (ALWET)
Duration: 01 JAN 2004 to 31 DEC 2006
Monday 24 November 2003, by Web Team

Wetlands constitute a large part of Albania’s natural environment and are a significant biodiversity pool. A preliminary list of around 60 wetlands exists. However, according to the 2002 Country Profile for Albania, there is a limited amount of knowledge on these resources. Reliable knowledge is the basic resource on which all decisions concerning conservation and wise use of wetlands should be made.

Project Objectives

The overall objective of the project is to build capacities, transfer know-how and establish the basis for the maintenance of national wetland archives as a prerequisite for wetland conservation in Albania.

The specific objectives are:

- To assess the situation and determine the national needs for capacity building regarding wetland inventory issues;
- To establish a basic infrastructure, i.e. hardware and software, in order to make relevant bodies capable of maintaining national wetland inventory archives;
- To build the capacity of relevant bodies, focusing on inventory and mapping issues and electronic data management and GIS, in order for them to undertaken wetland inventory actions;
- To apply the MedWet inventory at catchment, site and habitat levels on three sites;
- To disseminate project results; and
- To raise public awareness of a) the EU’s policy on wetland conservation, b) the MedWet initiative, c) wetlands values and d) the need for wetland inventory archives.
